  • Alignment of the ALICE Inner Tracking System with cosmic-ray tracks
  • 2010
  • In: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 5
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) experiment devoted to investigating the strongly interacting matter created in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC energies. The ALICE ITS, Inner Tracking System, consists of six cylindrical layers of silicon detectors with three different technologies; in the outward direction: two layers of pixel detectors, two layers each of drift, and strip detectors. The number of parameters to be determined in the spatial alignment of the 2198 sensor modules of the ITS is about 13,000. The target alignment precision is well below 10 mu m in some cases (pixels). The sources of alignment information include survey measurements, and the reconstructed tracks from cosmic rays and from proton-proton collisions. The main track-based alignment method uses the Millepede global approach. An iterative local method was developed and used as well. We present the results obtained for the ITS alignment using about 10(5) charged tracks from cosmic rays that have been collected during summer 2008, with the ALICE solenoidal magnet switched off.

  • Global observables and identified hadrons in the phenix experiment at RHIC
  • 2004
  • In: Particles and the Universe. - 9812388109 ; , s. 230-235
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The PHENIX experiment is one of the two large experiments at RHIC. It addresses most of the signals suggested from the Quark-Gluon Plasma. This paper focuses on the measurements of global observables and identified hadron spectra and particle ratios from the two first runs with Au+Au collisions at 130A GeV and 200A GeV. The energy density reached in the most central collisions is about 5 GeV/fm(3). The spectral shape of the transverse momentum spectra as well as the < PT > dependence on centrality indicate a strong collective expansion of the system in central collisions. The observed number of protons and p is about the same indicating that we are approaching a net baryon free region at mid rapidity. A larger number of protons than pions above about 2 GeV/c is observed.

  • 2006

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will in 2007 start colliding proton and lead beams at root(s) = 14 TeV and root(S-NN) = 5.5 TeV, respectively. The accelerator and the experiments are under construction and detailed studies of the physics program are being prepared. I will in this paper review the current status of the experiments and the heavy ion physics aspects that are unique at LHC.
